What is the Windows Experience Index?

The Windows Experience Index measures the capability of your computer's hardware and software configuration and expresses this measurement as a number called a base score. A higher base score generally means that your computer will perform better and faster than a computer with a lower base score, especially when performing more advanced and resource-intensive tasks.
Each hardware component receives an individual subscore. Your computer's base score is determined by the lowest subscore. For example, if the lowest subscore of an individual hardware component is 2.6, then the base score is 2.6. The base score is not an average of the combined subscores. However, the subscores can give you a view of how the components that are most important to you will perform, and can help you decide which components to upgrade.
You can use the base score to buy programs and other software that are matched to your computer's base score. For example, if your computer has a base score of 3.3, then you can buy any software designed for this version of Windows that requires a computer with a base score of 3 or lower.
The scores currently range from 1.0 to 7.9. The Windows Experience Index is designed to accommodate advances in computer technology. As hardware speed and performance improve, higher score ranges will be enabled. The standards for each level of the index generally stay the same. However, in some cases, new tests might be developed that can result in lower scores.

To check your  base score:
Click StartRight click Computer ► Properties
The following window will appear

Note:
The following steps will guide you how to increase Windows Experience Index score. These steps consist of file editing i.e you are just fooling your computer and other users. Here you are not making any hardware changes, though you increase Index score from initial value to higher value your computer will not perform as higher value computer. After increasing Index value keep note that it is not actual value, hence while buying any software or game buy those which support your actual index value and not the increased value.

Steps to Increase Windows Experience  Index score:

1. Go to "Windows Drive\Windows\Performance\WinSAT\DataStore" generally for most of the computers Windows drive is C:\ drive. Therefore go to
"C:\Windows\Performance\WinSAT\DataStore"

2. Look for file "xxxx-xx-xx xx.xx.xx.xxx Formal.Assessment (Initial).WinSAT.xml". (xxxx-xx... are the numbers which are different for different computers depending upon date and time of installation of windows.
Eg. "2011-01-15 14.13.35.831 Formal.Assessment (Initial).WinSAT.xml"

3. Make backup of the mentioned file by copying (Ctrl+C) and pasting (Ctrl+V) it in another safe folder. So to restore actual values when needed.

4. Right click the mentioned file Open with Notepad
It will look like this
(Any .xml editor can be used)

 Look for the highlighted part

<SystemScore>2.3</SystemScore><MemoryScore>5.1</MemoryScore><CpuScore>5.1</CpuScore><CPUSubAggScore>4.8</CPUSubAggScore><VideoEncodeScore>5.3</VideoEncodeScore><GraphicsScore>2.3</GraphicsScore><Dx9SubScore>3.1</Dx9SubScore><Dx10SubScore>0</Dx10SubScore><GamingScore>3.1</GamingScore><StdDefPlaybackScore>TRUE</StdDefPlaybackScore><HighDefPlaybackScore>TRUE</HighDefPlaybackScore><DiskScore>5.7</DiskScore>

In above text the yellow and red values defer from one computer to another. Now the yellow values are to be changed and the red values are to be kept as it is.

5. Current maximum  Windows Experience Index score is 7.9. Hence change the yellow highlighted  values to 7.9

<SystemScore>7.9</SystemScore><MemoryScore>7.9</MemoryScore><CpuScore>7.9</CpuScore><CPUSubAggScore>7.9</CPUSubAggScore><VideoEncodeScore>7.9</VideoEncodeScore><GraphicsScore>7.9</GraphicsScore><Dx9SubScore>3.1</Dx9SubScore><Dx10SubScore>0</Dx10SubScore><GamingScore>7.9</GamingScore><StdDefPlaybackScore>TRUE</StdDefPlaybackScore><HighDefPlaybackScore>TRUE</HighDefPlaybackScore><DiskScore>7.9</DiskScore>

note that the red highlighted values are kept as it is.

6. Saving the file:
File Save or Ctrl + S
Save to any location like Desktop
Save as window will appear

   1. Click on drop down arrow of Save as type and select "All Files".
   2. In file name box text "xxxx-xx-xx xx.xx.xx.xxx Formal.Assessment (Initial).WinSAT" will appear. Add  ".xml".
   i.e "xxxx-xx-xx xx.xx.xx.xxx Formal.Assessment (Initial).WinSAT.xml"
   3. Click on Save
   4. Go to Desktop and Copy "xxxx-xx-xx xx.xx.xx.xxx Formal.Assessment (Initial).WinSAT.xml" and Paste it in "C:\Windows\Performance\WinSAT\DataStore" [C:\ is the windows drive]
   5. Copy file window will appear saying "There is arleady a file with same name in this location " then  click on "Copy and replace".
   6. Destination folder access denied window will appear saying "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy to this folder"  click on "Continue"
[If access is denied after clicking on continue, log off current user account and log in to the administrator's user account]

7. Now check your base score/Windows Experience  Index score
Click StartRight click Computer ► Properties

Call your friend to show him your higher end computer !!!
